I want to try to make Facebook privacy as easy as possible (as of February 2013). This doesn&#8217;t cover everything, but hopefully it covers the main concerns most people might have.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"line-height: 1.4em;\">General Tips<\/span><\/h2>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id6aa6968a98ef7\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"View\"    >View<\/span><span id='swap-id6aa6968a98ef7'  class='colomat-swap' style='display:none;'>Hide<\/span><div id=\"target-id6aa6968a98ef7\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<span style=\"line-height: 1.4em;\">1) Don&#8217;t ever put something in a Facebook post that you would be humiliated if a friend&#8217;s friend saw it. Be especially careful if there could be bad consequences if the general public saw it.\u00a0Accidents happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.4em;\">2) Keep especially private things in private messages, not in social media. If it&#8217;s meant for just one person, message that person in a private message (either with Facebook messaging\/chat or email).<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.4em;\">\u00a0Social media is <em>social<\/em>, not private.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Understanding Privacy Settings<\/h2>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id6aa6968a98f86\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"View\"    >View<\/span><span id='swap-id6aa6968a98f86'  class='colomat-swap' style='display:none;'>Hide<\/span><div id=\"target-id6aa6968a98f86\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n1) You control the privacy of the material you post. Click the button to the left of the Post button to change who can see your post.<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"line-height: 1.4em;\" src=\"https:\/\/fbcdn-dragon-a.akamaihd.net\/cfs-ak-ash3\/676420\/630\/120939471321735_1833729336.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>2) To change the privacy of something you already posted (photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/help\/333140160100643\/\">Facebook<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fbcdn-dragon-a.akamaihd.net\/cfs-ak-prn1\/676606\/368\/233739099984085_1245187092.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>3) The privacy of my comments on others&#8217; posts depends on the privacy setting they chose when posting it, not on my privacy settings.<\/p>\n<p>So i<span style=\"line-height: 1.4em;\">f I comment on your post, you already controlled who will see my comment when you posted it. If it was posted as a public comment, my comment can be viewed by all my friends and all the friends of the person who posted it. Check the icon on the post: the icon below represents Friends, so all the poster&#8217;s friends will see my comment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-315 alignleft\" title=\"Facebook privacy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gospelriver.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Facebook.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"264\" height=\"21\" \/>\u00a0Friends can see this post and all comments.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-316 alignleft\" style=\"line-height: 1.4em;\" title=\"public\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gospelriver.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Facebook1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"24\" height=\"18\" \/>A globe means public&#8211; be careful with those.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-322 alignleft\" style=\"line-height: 1.4em;\" title=\"Facebook\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gospelriver.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Facebook2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"21\" height=\"18\" \/>Friends of Friends<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Check the privacy setting of a post before commenting on it or liking it. Your comment will be visible to either their friends, friends of friends, or anyone, depending on the setting. (There is also a custom setting that can restrict the post from certain people, show only to a particular group, etc.)<\/p>\n<p>4) According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/about\/privacy\/your-info\">Facebook<\/a>, public posts can be found by anyone using an Internet search engine.<\/p>\n<p>5) Any photo marked as a profile photo is viewable by anyone, anywhere.<\/p>\n<p>6) To control what gets posted to your timeline (or choose to review posts before they get posted), see this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/help\/437430672945092\/\">link<\/a>. (Your timeline is the info below your profile picture.)<\/p>\n<p>7) If you don&#8217;t want your birthday year, etc visible to others, adjust those settings by clicking Update Info (under profile pic) and edit your Basic info.<\/p>\n<p>8) The &#8220;ticker&#8221; or live feed at the upper right of your home page\u00a0makes it simple for you to &#8220;eavesdrop&#8221; when one of your Facebook friends says something to someone you don&#8217;t know.\u00a0\u00a0The ticker displays everything that your friends are doing on anyone&#8217;s post that is\u00a0<em>public<\/em> or <em>friends of friends<\/em>. So beware that lots of people could be seeing your comment depending on the privacy setting of the post or image you are commenting on.<\/p>\n<p>9) If you tag a photo, the friends of the person you tagged can see the photo, regardless of the photo&#8217;s privacy setting (with the exception of &#8220;only me&#8221;).
